I'm a huge fan of Yann Martel's allegorical story.
I read Life of Pi shortly after it had won the Booker, heavily intrigued by the story's improbable premise (boy in lifeboat with Bengal tiger). I was keen to see how the author could pull this off.
But pull it off he did, taking me back to a wondrous childhood of adventure tales and fables.
And you are welcome to whack me over the head with a leather-bound copy of War and Peace, but I am such a sucker for exotic book covers!
Please read the book, don't see the film: Ditto, Captain Corelli.

Oh, and FUN comment, Elyse!
Ha, If you went to see me speaking at an evening author event, you'd definitely fall asleep, if you were already tired. : )
Thank you for reading my review.

Cathrine ☯️ I loved it and for some bizarre reason I love friend reviews that completely disagree with me.

Oh, it's not too bizarre, Cathrine.
It's part of what makes Goodreads so interesting.
I enjoy a review that opposes mine, if a cogent reason is given.

Cndy Oh and I so loved the movie!

Kevin Ansbro Cndy wrote: "Oh and I so loved the movie!"

Not just you, a lot of people loved the movie Cndy, but for me it didn't convey the gritty fight for survival that the book did.

Apatt Great review, Kevin. Who is Captain Corelli? Is he from Fawlty Towers?

Kevin Ansbro Apatt wrote: "Great review, Kevin. Who is Captain Corelli? Is he from Fawlty Towers?"

No, that was Captain Birdseye!

Cheri Read this when it first came out, I think, and also gave it 4 stars. I bought the movie, too, but still haven't seen it yet.

Hmmm, wasn't at all impressed with movie, Cheri.
Some things are better left to the imagination.
Thanks for reading my review!

Apatt This is almost relevant, Kevin:

Jaidee oooooooooooooooooooooooo how i loathed this book but of course i respect your opinion ;)

Kevin Ansbro Jaidee wrote: "oooooooooooooooooooooooo how i loathed this book but of course i respect your opinion ;)"

Oh, really?
I read it a long time ago (when it first surfaced) and I loved that Martel succeeded in making such an improbable story believable. And I liked the whole metaphorical angle.
Still, you didn't like Girl on the Train, which many learned bibliophiles have recognised as being probably the best book ever written! ; )
Ha! Thanks for reading, Jaidee!

Nat K This one was like pulling teeth for me... I wish I loved it as much as others did (including your esteemed self).

Jules I read the book first, but also loved the film too.

Kimber Silver Your review is tempting me, Kevin! I agree with you about the cover. :-)

Kevin Ansbro Kimber wrote: "Your review is tempting me, Kevin! I agree with you about the cover. :-)"

Thanks, Kimber!
It's definitely one of my all-time favourite book covers and I was drawn right into the story. I love this book.

Linda Loved your review,Kevin. I liked the book but I was not quite as enamored as you were. Loved the cover as well but your THE FISH THAT CLIMBED THE TREE cover surpassed it! I do agree with you concerning the films.

Wow! Have only just spotted your wonderful comment, Linda.
Thank you for kind approval of my book cover!
😁

Linda Loved your review, Kevin! Liked the book...and the cover even more! The movie...not so much. But I agree with Linda. The Fish That Climbed the Tree cover did surpass it hands down!

Angela M Kevin, fantastic review. I didn’t like it as much as you, but I definitely agree it’s better to read the book than see the movie.

Nilanjana Haldar Oh yes, Kevin, you have hugely intensified my interest for this book!

Can’t wait to read it someday!

This I AM reading.

I loved the movie, but if that was great I wonder what I will discover inside.

Excited!

Thank you for the recommendation ( you had recommended it to me once!)

Thank you, Nilanjana!
The movie was nowhere near as good as the book, so this should prove to be a worthwhile read. : )

Nilanjana Haldar Noted ! 🙌🏻✨😊

Federico DN Pulled it off with flying colors I say. I enjoyed both book and film greatly, but to each their own. Glad Yann delivered for you Kevin!! I reserve that whacking for another day though, maybe ;)

My apologies for seeing your comment so late, Federico.
I'm pleased that you enjoyed the film as much as the book. There's probably something wrong with me! ; )

Federico DN Too late Kevin! Thank god I reserved that whacking. Now where's my copy of War and Peace? Hold on I'll be back.
