Barbie: The World Tour

Rate this book
For the press tour following the record-breaking release of Greta Gerwig’s award-winning, acclaimed Barbie movie, producer and star Margot Robbie and her stylist Andrew Mukamal immersed themselves in some of Barbie’s most iconic outfits and curated vintage pieces, then approached designers, from Giorgio Armani to Donatella Versace, to create looks inspired by the doll-size originals. Many of these looks were not seen as the official Barbie press tour was cut short—so Margot and Andrew worked with renowned fashion photographer Craig McDean to shoot her in the looks exactly as they were curated: Schiaparelli in Los Angeles, Vivienne Westwood in London, vintage Chanel with matching Streamline luggage at the airport, and beyond.

Accompanying McDean’s sumptuous photography are original Barbie dolls from the period, a treasure trove of rare materials from Mattel’s Barbie fashion archives, and the designers’ sketches and Polaroids from fittings, layered into evocative collage by art director Fabien Baron. With text by Margot Robbie and Andrew Mukamal, as well as handwritten contributions from the designers behind the looks (from Olivier Rousteing and Michelle Ochs to Manolo Blahnik and Jeremy Scott), this unique book blends the serious chic of high fashion with the serious fun of Barbie world—the dolls, the history, and the style that have captured imaginations for 65 years.

"Were living in the age of Barbie, and nowhere has that been more evident than the custom fashions Margot Robbie and stylist Andrew Mukamal curated for the billion-dollar grossing movies press tour." Variety

"Pulling inspiration from archive dolls, they aced the assignment indeed. From a black-and-white striped Hervé Legér bandage dress with white cat-eye sunglasses (a spitting image of the original 1959 Barbie) worn in Sydney and Day to Night 1985 Barbie-inspired looks by Versace in Seoul, to the pink polka dot Valentino mini dress (inspired by a 2015 Pink & Fabulous Barbie) and the sparkling Schiaparelli tulle-hemmed black gown from the movies LA premiere, the Barbie press tour looks helped fuel Barbiecore pinks global fashion takeover." The Hollywood Reporter

"Robbie will soon retire her run as the do-it-all doll when award season comes to a close, but one things for sure: these looks are fit for the fashion history books. If youre not ready to leave Barbie world so soon, make sure to pre-order the all-encompassing catalog for a behind-the-scenes look of Robbies dazzling Barbie fashion before it sells out upon release." Women's Wear Daily

"Alongside the outfits, Barbie: The World Tour features the original Barbie dolls that these looks are based on, material from Mattels Barbie fashion archives, designers sketches, Polaroids from fittings, text from Robbie and Mukamal, and handwritten contributions from designers. All of these awesome pieces come together in a collage format to make it the only fashion book youll ever need! Barbie: The World Tour is the perfect gift for fans of fashion and longtime Barbie lovers." Pop Insider

"And right when fans were still reveling her performance as Barbie, they became the recipients of an extraordinary gift: A book that proves that Robbie is, indeed, The Ultimate Barbie Girl. As expected, fans are, most certainly, going crazy about the book even before its release." Fandom Wire

"Margot Robbies iconic Barbie press tour outfits were some of the most coveted looks of 2023. Soon, fans can buy a book that immortalizes all of them. Barbie: The World Tour will feature never-before-seen looks that Robbie was unable to wear on the Barbie press tour due to the writers and actors strikes in 2023. It will also include design sketches of some of Robbies most iconic Barbie-inspired looks, Polaroid photos and images taken directly from Mattels archives." US Weekly

The Barbie-mania isn't over yet. Today, Mattel and Rizzoli announced a new book, Barbie: The World Tour, featuring "all the glamour and high style of the most popular doll in the world," following Margot Robbie's style on her press tour, where she channeled some of the doll's famous fashions. Town & Country

If youre still on a Barbie high and cant seem to get enough of the pink-laden fashion moments weve been served over the past year, this news is for you. On March 8, style-focused illustrated book Barbie: The World Tour is hitting shelves, aiming to satiate your appetite for the iconic doll and the record-breaking movie. The Zoe Report

"Fashion enthusiasts and Barbiecore fans, rejoice. Worth every cent. I love Margot Robbie, even have one of the MR Barbies, but what she and Andrew Mukamal do in this book is so much more than just showcasing the outfits made for the tour. They bring the designers and Barbie into the spotlight, but also talk about fashion now and then. A must have for any Barbie/fashion/Margot Robbie lover.

Absolutely love this book - beautiful photography and behind the scenes details. Margot Robbie and Andrew Mukamal must have had the most fun it's possible to have in Hollywood fashion!

I felt personally oppressed by the actors' strike last summer, as it stopped several of Margot's specific Barbie outfits from being seen. But we get a chance to see Gay Parisienne and Roman Holiday in the pages of this book!

It's everything. I love how carefully recreated the looks were for the press tour, right down to the jewelry. It's very clear that Margot and Andrew were thoughtful and having fun when deciding on what the outfits would look like. The noted on how he tried to bring them into a modern piece that Margot would still wear show such attention to detail. I love fashion and this book is a must, one of the best marketing concepts executed in modern day.

This was an amazing behind the scenes look at the immense work to create visionary looks we all saw last year for the movie premieres. And first looks for some of them since the tour was cut short due to the SAG strike. In awe and inspiring.

Moviegoers in their Barbie Best were just as much of a spectacle as the film itself– with fashion as a catalyst for their self-actualization. Just as Barbie intended."

very cool book. made me emotional reading it because of the impact Barbie had and the fashion, bringing to life Barbie’s clothes and celebrating femininity. I teared up several times lol. the photography is absolutely gorgeous, as are the fashion sketches. there were some handwritten parts I couldn’t read though, they would’ve take me far too long to decipher.

I was just a kid but I remember when the first Barbie doll was introduced.
A doll? A doll that looks like a grown-up? No little girl is going to like that or buy it! Boy! Was I wrong!

Recently my wife and I watched the Barbie move on Blu-ray and I have say it was funny, extremely well-crafted, had a great cast and some killer musical numbers.

OK, admit it! Of all the actresses in the world there is only one who could pull off playing Barbie. And that's Margot Robbie.

She’s beautiful, an excellent actress and has the talent to pull it off some really memorable characters-Harley Quinn anyone?

Like most films Barbie had a press junket and tour before the film came out.

Rizzoli/Universe presents the oversize Barbie: The World Tour-Margot Robbie Andrew Mukamal book wrapped in a clear dust jacket and featuring a full color body shot of Margot as Barbie on its cover-along with her accessories.

The oversize, hardbound book also boasts come spectacular interior photographs that really pop on the dull-gloss paper stock.

The interior paper makes the color photos look retro and like something seen on a toy package.

Inside are shots of Margot dressed as Barbie in a plethora of fashionable cloths complemented with photos of an actual Barbie doll in the same outfits.

Photo montages, sketches, drawings, full-page closeups and double-page spreads and notes accompanied by text written chronicle the tour.

Jewelry, furs, seasonal outfits, accessories and commentaries by the crew behind the tour are also included. It’s a Barbie bonanza!

It's an extremely well-designed and put together book with great photos and interesting text and personal observations culminating in a stellar tribute to Barbie.

Barbie: The World Tour is a lovely coffee table book showcasing the outfits from the Barbie movie’s press tour (which was cut short due to the actors’ strike). So much work went into preparing and recreating some of the doll’s iconic outfits so the book was made for fans to look and study.

In the preparation for the press tour, iconic Barbie doll outfits were chosen (e.g. vintage outfits from the 1960s as well as some from the 1980s, 90s and earlier this century). Designers were picked to recreate and update these outfits based on their strengths – and of course they said yes. Think Givenchy, Armani and Versace to name a few. Barbie’s iconic shoes were recreated by Manolo Blahnik (I’ve checked – you can’t buy his designs) and Christian Louboutin. Jewellery, bags and hats were also tailormade. The book includes notes from some of the designers on their thoughts about Barbie, pink and the items they have recreated. These are handwritten and can be difficult to make out the words occasionally due to the handwriting!

Of course, there are loads of pictures of the outfits which is great, particularly for those that were never seen in public. I would have liked some more full length pictures so I could see the shoes and get an idea of how the whole outfit works. Some outfits have more pictures than others, particularly those that were seen on the press tour (understandable). I also enjoyed the interview with the authors at the start of the book where they reveal their vision and plan for the outfits. I do wish they had included some of the lipsticks used because there are some gorgeous colours!

Overall, there isn’t a lot of text but that isn’t really what this book is for. It’s to have fun and explore the clothes that made Barbie and Margot as Barbie. A must for Barbie doll and movie fans!

How could you not expect me to give this book 4 stars?

Are you shocked I didn’t give it 5? Okay yeah, I’m shocked too but I have to maintain some semblance of credibility.

As soon as I heard that this book was becoming a reality I knew I needed to get my hands on it.

It’s everything I could have dreamed of and more. With beautiful discussions from Margot and Andrew Mukamal the brains behind the infamous Barbie Press Tour fashion, the original couture fashion house sketches and plans of each piece of clothing or accessory that went into each stunning outfit to perfectly planned and executed photo shoots of Margot wearing the pieces, but also of the pieces themselves, and the original Barbies that inspired them.

No stone is left unturned as it includes notes from each fashion designer asked to contribute to a look, gushing over how honoured they are, or how fun of an idea this is, to pouring their heart out about the idea of Barbie and how much they loved the movie. The photography is stunning and really encapsulates the old Hollywood glamour meets dream like imaginary play time vibe of Barbie.

The way that they spoke about how carefully they selected certain outfits for certain cities based on the culture or vibe they were going for, and how sad it was to not get to see some of them in action, but to still hear the story behind their creations and see stunning photographs of them on Margot.

If you were just as enamoured by the Press Tour for Barbie as you were the movie, enjoy fashion, art or just Margot Robbie I recommend giving this book a read. It has the same tone as the movie and is so joyous and beautiful as it tells the tale of how costume design and fashion is an art form in itself

This book perfectly encapsulated the excitement I had watching Margot do the press events in real time over the summer; gushing over the attention to detail on outfits seared into my brain from childhood like “Totally Hair Barbie” and anxiously wondering what she would possibly wear next that could top this.

Each of the seventeen iconic dolls has promotional photos from their original release as well as gorgeous, new photos to showcase the entirety of the figure and included accessories. The pairings of dolls to the designers, the excited correspondence from the designers, and Margot Robbie in the fully realized interpretations is lovingly curated.

Barbie cultivated a maximalist in me, and kit bashing my action figures and dolls together to make a look was a normal thing to do… to see how the final interpretations were STYLED, that one designer alone wasn’t handed the reigns, Manola Blahnik heels with Chanel jewelry, etc, attributed to the success of the looks on the pink carpet and I loved getting to see that synergy from big couture houses embracing the spirit of Barbie. A must-own for any Barbie fan or fashionista.

The costumes from the actual movie are phenomenal and absolutely deserve their very own coffee table book just like this one (seriously… can someone please make that happen?) but I think Margot Robbie’s styling from the Barbie press tour was on a whole other level! What a perfect way to not only give a peek behind the scenes but also showcase the looks we missed out on because of the strike (particularly those Miu Miu and Prada looks intended for Tokyo). I especially loved all the flatlays comparing the actual doll clothes with the designer’s interpretations of them. Styling for actors inspired by whatever movie they’re promoting isn’t a new concept, but hopefully the Barbie press tour inspires everyone to take more risks! I will say some of the hair and makeup choices from the tour look a little underwhelming compared to the photoshoots done for this book, but I get it…. we’re in loose waves era and Margot is the ultimate laid-back Aussie girl! AND they probably didn’t want everything to look too costume-y. I’m really glad they went all in for the book though!

I was entranced from cover to cover. It’s a beautifully crafted celebration of the year of Barbie, female empowerment, and the team that brought the vision to life. The book offers a sneak peek behind the curtain, detailing the intention and thoughtfulness behind each decision. It explores the Barbie dolls selected to inspire Margot’s outfits throughout the press tour, reflecting the personality of each city visited, and pairs them with fashion houses whose aesthetics complement their execution. This is equipped with sketches, swatches, notes from the designers, and conversations among collaborators that are equivalent to poetry. It’s a fashion editorial, history lesson, and home décor all in one. 5/5 stars across the board!

Barbie-mania was impossible to avoid in the summer of 2023 and even more so was the paradigm of pink fashion adopted by millions across the globe. ‘Barbie: The World Tour’ excavates Mattel’s doll archives to adorn lead actress Margot Robbie in fashions inspired by the style icon to promote the film.

Packed with glossy high resolution photographs with companion text, ‘Barbie: The World Tour’ is a celebration of femininity and a delight for the eyes. Despite the creativity exuded by the world’s most renowned fashion designers, some of them need to seriously practice their handwriting! I also wish there was a higher ratio of text but it’s just a preference and not a fault of the format.

Absolutely brilliant from the beginning conversation with Margaret Zhang to the afterwords by Greta Gerwig. The pgotography is to die for of course but my favorite aspect was to see the process of designing the garments--from the original dolls, to the designer's sketches with handwritten comments, both versions laid down like doll clothes on the floor then the final look with Margot. It brought me back to my little girl dreams of being a fashion designer, and what more could I ask out of a Barbie art book really?

I really enjoyed this collection of outfits from the Barbie movie press tour. I think what the team came up with the promote the movie was delightful, and it was really cool to see the behind the scenes of how they came up with what looks to reproduce and why they chose certain designers or brands. Overall, it was a lot more insightful than I thought it would be. Logistically, I wish the book wasn't so large (but it is more of a coffee table book) and that the designer's writing was a bit easier to read. It's a lovely book though!
