Firstly, what i LOVED was the art style of this story - it was absolutely entrancing and powerful and so incredibly well done to create a very tense and, at times, spooky atmosphere and to portray themes and characters.
What I think this book suffered from was having WAY too many things going on. This book deals with, quite simply, too many topics and ideas - there's queerness, there's conversations about race, there's commentary on America, Europe, Germany specifically, and the world, as well as discussing the holocaust and WWII, as well as anti-semitism, as well as bullying, friendships, school, familial relationships, death of a loved one and grief, as well as a murder mystery, and probs others I'm forgetting. I really wish it had chosen to focus on just maybe 3 or 4 things, because I found it incredibly hard to follow and when yet another idea was brought up I found myself sighing rather than being excited about a new queer character or a development in the mystery.
It was way too long, and it's only book 1. If I'm absolutely EXHAUSTED by the end of the first book in a series, it makes it very difficult to try to pick up book 2....more
