Cloud Atlas

Cloud Atlas is a book which is not particularly easy to read, requires patience and perseverance, but is ultimately very rewarding. It is a story spanning more than one hundred years that combines an entertaining - even humourous - plot with far bigger and more important issues like slavery and exploitation. The novel's language changes and develops with time and every new character introduced is as fresh and interesting as all those who came before. In the end, it is pure genius. It is also not a novel that I can adequately put into any kind of review, so I suggest instead that you watch this beautiful trailer created for the 2012 film adaptation - it convinced me to read it, after all:

I don't know why but I had been under the impression that this would be a difficult read. But it's been nothing but engaging. I'd even go so far as to say "addictive".
I too have that impression. Probably due to the skepticism on how how filmable it was during the film's inception and production.
Oh nice, hope you enjoy this. It has grown to be one of my favorites. I'll be looking forward to your thoughts!
I read the first page of this novel 3 times and I could not comprehend the dialogue. I had to put it down. I hope you have better luck than I did.
Really? I found the first story in it really easy to read and enjoyable. I have heard that it becomes more difficult later on, though, so I don't know how I'll handle that.
Saw a TV promo for this last night, and have the book on hold at the library! : ) Good to know it's worth the read.
Looking forward to reading it. I am somewhere around halfway through "Ghostwritten" and I find it quite special (in a good way). Is it as good as everyone says??
I also liked the fact that while being entertaining, this book was also thought-provoking due the underlying subject matters and themes woven into the story. That's a good point about the diversity of language and such between the stories also. Now that the movie is out, we can see what a good job they did in portraying the richly detailed settings.
Thanks to your review I managed to read the whole book. You are so right when you say this book requires patience and perseverance!
