if you want to read an excellent book about autism in a young person, read marcelo in the real world. this book is like hilary swank - you can tell it is trying really hard to win all the awards but it has no heart inside. and yet everyone eats it up. C0ME ON!!

no one likes gimmicks.

Jasmine this one.

The Crimson Fucker you do know i can't read shit backwards!!! i feel cheated! like that time i ahd to put a mirror infront of my tv screen in FFVI!!! i had to take a screen shot of this and flip it in paint!!! i want those 3 minutes of my life back!!!!!

karen i did not know you were flawed. my apologies.

message 4: by David (new)

David How did you do that?? Tell me.

I read Haddon's A Spot of Bother. It was horrible. It was like one of those cutesy British films (Four Weddings and a Funeral, for example) that I loathe. I can already picture a gagworthy film adaptation with Hugh Dancy and Kiera Knightly.

David Everyone 'eats up' Hilary Swank? Is that how she broke Chad Lowe's heart?

The Crimson Fucker *deep Breath* *not wasting my time*

i finally send em Karen! i hope you hungry! cuz i sent you a shit load!

karen yeah - mfso teached me!

i am having a shitty day, so i am looking forward to cookies like crazy, alfonso! i am skipping school for the first time ever in my college career to put my house back together again, and it is the worst.

message 9: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine hey this was the review I asked for. I forgotted all about that.

The Crimson Fucker WOW! that's some news!!! ain't that one of the signs of the apocalypse?

karen it's no great shakes - but it is something at least!

Joshua Nomen-Mutatio Let me explain the meaning of my post: karen and I exchanged information about how to make text appear upside down and/or backwards once. The joke is that since I led her to the easily found sites that make this possible that she owes me something, even though of course she doesn't. That is the joke and the full meaning of my post.

the letters look all jumbly upsidedown

Joshua Nomen-Mutatio It's a side-effect. All great things require sacrifice.

karen you can totally have half my votes. i have a fever and so am weak. have half of allllll my votes, i don't even care.

message 16: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine feel better karen. I work tomorrow 9:30-4 you can half call out.

karen ha! i can't skip school one day and then work the next - that is a slippery slope!!

Mariel Is it as square as Hilary's jaw?

I liked the way he did unintentional humor. Still, I'll never get over how this was recommended to me: "He's like an autistic Holden Caulfield."

Backwards messages! When does Paul McCartney die?

message 19: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine just be late!!

The Crimson Fucker yay! thanks for the explanatioN! that totally makes sense now! i'm sorry! i'm so stupid and i over reacted? hug?

Meredith Holley 1000 likes for you!!!

karen what, am i that bee?

Meredith Holley karen wrote: "what, am i that bee?"

I choose to ignore that the bee exists. I mean 1000 likes from me for this review.

karen did you know i hate that bee? still??

Meredith Holley Did it become non-evil? No? Then, yes, I know you hate the bee. Is the bee still a symbol of goodreads.com degenerating into a Disney® Official Store? Yes? Then, yes, I know you still hate the bee.

Joshua Nomen-Mutatio 875 VOTES AND COUNTING...

Joshua Nomen-Mutatio I love how the sole explanation for this video is "Had to do something with all the slow motion film of bees I had."

karen hhahahaa waste not want not.

Joshua Nomen-Mutatio The footage itself is sort of beautiful, while the overall idea is so dumb I have to wonder if it's some sort of Dadaist prank or something. I'm a sucker for hi-def slow-mo in general though. There's a lot of it out there on youtube. Slow motion shots of little mundane events. Jello square bouncing off a table, water balloon exploding, match being lit, etc.

karen you spend a lot of time on there, don't you?? do you need a good porn site recommendation?? i worry about you.

message 31: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine isn't there like a uporn?

Joshua Nomen-Mutatio Haha! Not too much. I've gone on some jags though where one video leads to the next to the next to the next... Most of it is looking for totally random things to show others, such as the good goodreaders of goodreads.com

You wanna show me pornography?? Like naked sex stuff? GAH-ross! You think I'm some sort of human with a pulse that looks at pornographic images on the computer?? Consider yourself flagged.

message 33: by Mir (new) - rated it 4 stars

Mir karen and I exchanged information about how to make text appear upside down and/or backwards once.

Until you mentioned that I was totally thinking those lines were Greek and not even trying to read them.

message 34: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine why is the o not capitalized?

karen huh. i have no idea...

ghosts?

message 36: by Milly (new)

Milly I really enjoyed Marcelo in the Real World and I was hoping for this one to be as good, but I guess not! Thanks for the insight on this one.

karen yeah, i totally read these in the wrong order. i just read marcelo recently and i loved it.

message 38: by Lucienne (new)

Lucienne Diver I disagree. I haven't read Marcelo in the Real World, but I loved The Curious Incident.... I was on the edge of my seat the whole time concerned about the main character.

karen cool - yeah, a lot of people loved this book, it just didn't work for me. it seemed forced and that is always off-putting to me.

message 40: by Kendra (new)

Kendra I'm autistic myself, and despite liking the book I can see how someone would come to your conclusion about it. People treat this book as if it were the key to understanding autistic individuals, even people that work with them, and it shouldn't be like that. I think the main character in The Curious Incident was a rather stereotypical representation. Marcelo was much more realized but not a typical case of autism. It'd be interesting if an author were to write a collection of short stories or something similar with autistic characters to showcase the diversity of autism.

karen well, it must be frustrating to even attempt to write an autistic character precisely because the spectrum of autism is so broad. and i don't even care that it is a failure on the "autistic character" front, i just think it failed on the "this is an enjoyable piece of literature" front. i only mentioned marcelo because i read it really recently and i just thought it was such a beautifully written book that very few people i know have read - i just wanted to promote it a little.

are there books you would recommend??

message 42: by K.D. (new) - rated it 3 stars

K.D. Absolutely How did you do the upside down letters?

No, I liked this book. Mainly for how it attacked the novels that are hard to understand. I had a good laugh reading them.

But I will not argue. To each his own. Peace, Karen!

message 44: by Joe (new) - rated it 5 stars

Joe :( A karen review I strongly disagree with. It was bound to happen, but I am sad anyway.

karen awwwww

i am sorry to disappoint you!
but we had a good run, didn't we?

message 46: by Joe (new) - rated it 5 stars

Joe Boy, did we ever.

message 47: by Joe (new) - rated it 5 stars

Joe ALTHOUGH! Your review did make me laugh, so I will 'like' it anyway. Because that's just the kind of virtual friend I am.

karen hahaahh don't feel obligated just because of giggles!

although giggles are way powerful.

message 49: by Brad (new)

Brad Kittle I might need to read this book, I love Hillary Swank!

message 50: by Leah (new)

Leah :( I love Hilary Swank. I contest your notion that she is heartless. Let's stake her and find out.
